What is the best season for surfing in India?

India’s long coastline spans both the Arabian Sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the east, which means the best surfing season varies significantly depending on which coast you are visiting. Understanding these seasonal patterns will help you plan your surf trip at the perfect time.  On the west coast — which includes Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala — the best surfing season runs from October to April. During these months, the northeast monsoon has passed, seas are calmer, and consistent swells generated by the Arabian Sea create excellent wave conditions for both beginners and experienced surfers. November through February are the peak months, with the cleanest waves, the most pleasant weather, and the largest number of surf schools operating at full capacity. March and April still offer good conditions but can be windier.  June to September is the southwest monsoon season on the west coast, and surfing during this period is extremely dangerous and officially restricted on most beaches. The seas are rough and unpredictable, rip currents are severe, and beach safety authorities close many beaches to water sports. Even experienced local surfers treat the monsoon with great respect.  On the east coast — including Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha — the pattern is reversed. October to January is the prime season, fuelled by swells from the Bay of Bengal and the northeast monsoon. Some of India’s best and most powerful waves occur on the east coast during this period, making it particularly attractive for intermediate and advanced surfers. The famous surf spots at Mahabalipuram and Visakhapatnam see their best action during these months.  By strategically choosing the east or west coast based on the time of year, you can essentially surf in India for most of the year.
