Is surfing safe for beginners?

Surfing is absolutely safe for beginners when it is practised under proper professional supervision at a reputable, certified surf school. Like any adventure sport, surfing carries inherent risks, but these risks are dramatically reduced when the right precautions are taken, and a good surf school will ensure your safety at every step of the process.  Before any student enters the water, responsible surf schools conduct a comprehensive beach safety briefing. This covers how to identify and escape rip currents, the correct way to fall off a surfboard to avoid injury, how to protect your head when surfacing after a wipeout, ocean etiquette with other surfers, how waves work and how to read them, and the specific safety rules of that particular beach.  All beginner lessons use large, soft-top foam surfboards that are specifically designed to minimise injury risk. These boards are wide and stable, making it easier to balance, and the foam construction greatly reduces the chance of injury from a board hitting you during a fall. Students are also fitted with a leg rope (leash) that keeps the board attached to the ankle, preventing the board from washing away after a fall.  Lessons are always conducted in the whitewash zone — the shallow area of the beach where broken waves roll in gently — rather than in the open ocean. Water depths in this zone are typically waist-deep or less, which adds an additional layer of safety. Instructor-to-student ratios in reputable schools are kept low, ensuring constant supervision in the water.  The right surf school will also check weather and surf conditions before every lesson and cancel or relocate the session if conditions are not suitable for beginners. Life jackets are sometimes provided for very nervous beginners or young children. Surfing with an experienced, certified instructor transforms it from a potentially risky activity into a thoroughly safe and exhilarating experience.
