One of the most beginner-friendly aspects of taking surf lessons at a reputable school is that all necessary equipment is included in your lesson fee — you don’t need to bring or own anything to get started. Here is a detailed breakdown of the equipment you can expect to be provided during your surfing lesson in India.
The surfboard is the centrepiece of every lesson. Beginner students are provided with a soft-top foam surfboard — a large, stable board typically measuring 8 to 10 feet in length. These boards are specifically designed for learning: the foam construction is forgiving and safe if the board hits you, the extra length and width provide maximum buoyancy and stability, and the flat-bottomed design makes paddling and balancing easier. As you progress, your instructor will gradually introduce you to shorter, more performance-oriented boards.
A leg rope (also called a leash) is attached to one end of the board and secured around your ankle. This essential safety device ensures that when you fall off the board — which happens to every surfer — the board stays close to you and does not become a hazard to other swimmers or surfers. It also makes it much easier to retrieve your board after a wipeout. Surf wax is applied to the top surface of the board to create traction, preventing your feet from slipping when you stand up. Surf schools apply this to the board before your lesson. A rash guard — a lightweight protective top — is included by most schools and provides protection from sunburn and board friction. Some schools also provide sunscreen, extra fins for the board, and basic first aid supplies on the beach. More comprehensive programs may include video analysis equipment so you can review your surfing technique after the session — a powerful learning tool. All gear is included in your lesson at Goa Surf Community.
