Is surfing dangerous during monsoon season in India?

Yes — surfing during the monsoon season in India is considered extremely dangerous, and it is strongly advised that beginners never attempt to surf during this period on the west coast. Understanding why the monsoon poses such serious risks will help you respect this natural phenomenon and plan your surf trips safely.  The southwest monsoon season on India’s west coast runs from approximately June to September, affecting Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra. During these months, the Arabian Sea undergoes a dramatic transformation. Wave heights increase significantly — often reaching 3 to 6 metres or more — and these waves are often poorly formed, chaotic, and extremely powerful. Unlike the clean, well-structured swells of the October–April season, monsoon waves are irregular, unpredictable, and much more violent.  Rip currents, which are powerful channels of water flowing away from the shore, are far more common, stronger, and more dangerous during the monsoon. Even experienced swimmers can be caught by monsoon rip currents, and escaping one without proper knowledge and fitness is genuinely difficult. For non-swimmers or beginner surfers, this represents a life-threatening hazard.  Visibility in and around the water drops significantly during monsoon, with turbid (murky) water making it harder to see underwater hazards. Jellyfish populations increase dramatically during and after the monsoon, posing additional risks. Heavy rains, strong onshore winds, and overcast skies further reduce the quality and safety of the surfing experience.  Recognising all of these dangers, the Goa government and coastal safety authorities officially close most beaches to water sports — including surfing — during the monsoon period. Lifeguard services are withdrawn, and swimming in the sea is prohibited at most beaches. These restrictions exist to protect lives, and they should be respected absolutely.  On the east coast (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha), the monsoon months coincide with the arrival of the northeast monsoon, which can create powerful and well-formed waves. However, these conditions are typically suitable only for experienced surfers, not beginners. Always check the surf season calendar at Goa Surf Community before planning your trip.
