The duration of a surf lesson can vary between schools and lesson types, but the standard beginner surf lesson in India is typically between 90 minutes and 2 hours in total duration. Understanding how this time is structured will help you prepare and get the most out of each session. The lesson generally begins on the beach with a safety and theory briefing that lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes. During this land-based component, your instructor will cover essential topics including the basics of how waves are formed and how to read them, the different zones of a beach break (whitewash, green wave face, lineup), how to safely enter and exit the ocean with a surfboard, rip current identification and escape techniques, surf etiquette — the unwritten rules of the lineup, the parts of the surfboard and how they work, and the pop-up technique practised on the sand. This is not just preamble — the beach session is a crucial part of your learning. Students who pay close attention and practise the pop-up thoroughly on the sand almost invariably progress faster in the water. The in-water portion of the lesson is where the real magic happens, and it typically runs for 60 to 90 minutes. Your instructor will be in the water with you throughout, guiding you into waves, providing real-time feedback on your technique, and helping you improve with every attempt. After the in-water session, most good instructors conduct a brief review session on the beach — discussing what went well, what needs improvement, and setting goals for your next session. Some schools with video analysis capability will review footage of your surfing with you at this stage, which is an incredibly useful learning tool. Some schools offer extended 2.5-hour or half-day sessions for small groups or private students who want more time in the water. Multi-day packages typically include one or two sessions per day.
