Are there surfing certifications in India?

Yes, India has a growing and increasingly formalised framework of surfing certifications, both for recreational surfers who want to document their skill development and for those aspiring to become professional surf instructors.  At the national level, the Surfing Federation of India (SFI) is the governing body for competitive surfing in the country. The SFI is affiliated with the International Surfing Association (ISA), which is the world governing body for surfing and a member of the International Olympic Committee. Through this affiliation, India participates in ISA World Surfing Games and other international competitions, and Indian surf coaches and instructors can pursue ISA-certified coaching qualifications.  The ISA offers a globally recognised coaching certification called the ISA Level 1 Surf Instructor Course. This course covers surf pedagogy, ocean safety, first aid relevant to surfing, and practical teaching skills. Surf instructors who hold ISA Level 1 certification have been trained to international standards and are qualified to teach beginner surfers safely and effectively. When choosing a surf school in India, asking about instructor certifications is always a good idea.  For recreational surfers who have completed a beginner program, some surf schools issue their own course completion certificates. While these are not internationally standardised credentials, they represent a meaningful record of your learning achievement and can be a fun souvenir of your surf journey.  For those interested in pursuing surfing as a sport or career, the SFI maintains competition rankings and organises national championship events. Performing well in these competitions and earning national ranking points is the pathway to representing India at the international level.  Surf lifesaving certifications, separate from surfing sport certifications, are also available in India through various ocean safety organisations and are relevant for instructors and beach safety personnel.
