Can girls learn surfing safely in India?

Absolutely, and emphatically yes! Women and girls are one of the fastest-growing groups within the Indian surfing community, and the surf scene in Goa and Karnataka in particular has become increasingly welcoming, inclusive, and celebrated in its approach to female surfers of all backgrounds and experience levels.  Safety is naturally the foremost concern, and reputable surf schools in India take specific steps to ensure a safe, comfortable, and respectful learning environment for women. Many schools have female instructors on their team, which many women find more comfortable, particularly for one-on-one physical coaching in the water. Changing rooms, separate bathrooms, and private facilities are standard at quality surf schools.  Class sizes are kept small, ensuring that each student receives close supervision and that the instructor is always within reach in the water. Women surfing as beginners are never pushed into conditions that exceed their comfort level — a good instructor will always prioritise your confidence and safety over pushing pace.  From a cultural perspective, Goa’s surf scene has a notably progressive, international atmosphere. The beaches at Arambol, Mandrem, and Morjim attract an open-minded, diversity-embracing crowd, and harassment of female surfers or students is not tolerated by reputable schools. Reading reviews from past female students is an excellent way to verify a school’s reputation and environment.  In terms of attire, women are welcome to wear whatever swimwear they are comfortable in — from a full-coverage wetsuit to a bikini with a rash guard. There is no pressure or judgment around clothing choices. A rash guard is recommended regardless of outfit choice, for sun and board friction protection.  Surfing itself is a sport where gender provides no inherent disadvantage. Women are naturally flexible, have an excellent sense of balance, and often have the patience and technique-focus that leads to beautiful, graceful surfing. Some of India’s most celebrated surfers are women, inspiring a new generation of young Indian girls to take to the waves. Women-friendly surf programs are a priority at Goa Surf Community.
