What should I carry to a surf lesson?

Preparing properly for your surf lesson will make the entire experience more comfortable, safer, and more enjoyable. The list of what to bring is refreshingly simple — surf lessons are designed to be accessible and low-fuss, and you certainly don’t need to show up loaded with expensive gear. Here is a comprehensive guide to what you should carry to your surfing lesson in India.  The single most important thing to bring is waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. India’s tropical sun is intense, and you will be spending extended time outdoors with wet skin — a combination that dramatically increases your risk of sunburn. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin at least 15 to 20 minutes before your lesson begins, and carry it with you for reapplication during breaks. If possible, choose a reef-safe formula.  Wear your swimwear to the lesson so you are ready to go when you arrive. Men should wear boardshorts; women can wear a swimsuit, bikini, or swim shorts. Bring a rash guard (your surf school may provide one, but having your own is more hygienic and comfortable). Pack a towel and a complete change of dry clothes — including dry undergarments and footwear — for after the session. Getting out of wet clothes quickly after your lesson helps prevent skin irritation and keeps you comfortable.  A refillable water bottle is essential. Surfing is physically demanding, the sun is strong, and it is very easy to become dehydrated without realising it. Drink water before, during breaks, and after your session. A light snack — a banana, energy bar, or some nuts — is also a good idea for maintaining energy levels, particularly if your lesson runs for more than 90 minutes.  Bring enough cash to cover your lesson fee (some schools also accept UPI or card payments, but cash is always a safe backup). A small dry bag or waterproof pouch for your phone and valuables is useful if your school does not have secure locker facilities. Leave expensive jewellery, watches, and electronics at your accommodation. Flip-flops or sandals for walking to and from the beach, and a hat or cap for sun protection before and after your lesson, complete your kit.
