Choosing the right attire for your surfing lesson is important for comfort, safety, sun protection, and freedom of movement in the water. The good news is that you don’t need to invest in expensive surf-specific clothing to get started — a few basic items are all you need for your first lesson. The most important garment for surfing in India is a rash guard, also known as a rash vest or surf shirt. This is a lightweight, quick-drying lycra or spandex top that provides protection against two of the most common surfing irritants: UV radiation from the sun and board rash (skin friction caused by rubbing against the textured surface of the surfboard). In India’s intense tropical sun, a long-sleeved rash guard with UPF 50+ protection is particularly recommended. Many surf schools in Goa and Karnataka include rash guards in their lesson fee, but it is always good to confirm beforehand. For the lower body, men should wear boardshorts — loose-fitting shorts designed to dry quickly and allow a full range of motion. Avoid regular cotton shorts as they become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Women can wear a swimsuit, bikini, or swim shorts, ideally paired with a rash guard. High-waist swim shorts or surf leggings are also a great option for women who prefer more coverage. Avoid wearing jewellery, rings, and loose accessories, as these can snag on equipment or cause injury. Footwear is not required in the water, but reef shoes or water shoes are helpful if your beach has a rocky entry or a coral reef. After your lesson, have dry clothes ready to change into — a towel, dry shorts, and a fresh t-shirt will make you feel much more comfortable. Don’t forget to apply waterproof, reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+) to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before your lesson. Reapply after extended time in the water.
